Tibet is a small region in Asia that covers virtually all of the Tibetan Plateau. Known as the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people, the place is also inhabited by many Han Chinese and Hui people. It is the highest region in the world, with an average elevation of around 5,000 m, and the world’s largest mountain, Mount Everest, also lies in Tibet. While the economy is mainly powered by subsistence agriculture, Tibet has quite a bit to offer in terms of tourism. In fact, it has become one of the driving forces in Tibet. The Tibetan culture and history is something that you would want to explore as well. Many people who go on a Tibet vacation, usually travel through mainland China. But, if you are thinking of traveling to Tibet for 2020, you might want to plan it accordingly. If you don’t know much about the places to visit or things to do, here is a brief guide on how to plan your Tibet vacation for 2020.

Tour to Lhasa

Lhasa is the largest tourist center in all of Tibet and arguably their most popular destination. Most people who travel to Tibet, usually start their journey from here, and so should you. The stay in Lhasa shouldn’t be very extended; you can stay here for four days and explore the main attractions before going on to visit other places. If you have limited time, four days is enough, but if you can extend your trip a bit, there are many other things to do. The best destinations in Lhasa include the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. Of course, you will want to visit the holy center to see the temples and sights, and then take a visit to the Barkhor Street.

Gyantse & Shigatse

If you can spare a couple of days, you should consider visiting Gyantse & Shigatse as well. Gyantse is still relatively untouched by Chinese tourism, so you will be able to enjoy the relatively quiet atmosphere of this mountainous village.

Then, you have Shigatse. The second-largest city in Tibet, Shigatse, has long rivaled Lhasa for its influence. You are going to see many Buddhists living in harmony as you travel to Gyantse and Shigatse both. You will also cross Yamdrok Lake and the gorgeous Korala Glacier.

Mount Everest

Mount Everest attracts people from all over the world who travel to Nepal to conquer the mountain. But, if you are traveling from Tibet, you can go to Mount Everest from Shigatse. It’s an 8-hour drive from there, but you will come to the Everest Base Camp on the Chinese side afterward. The entire South Face of Mount Everest will be revealed to you, home to the gorgeous Three Steps. If the weather is clear, you might be able to see one of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets of your life here.

Visiting Ngari

If you are thirsty for the wilderness and want a sense of adventure, Mount Everest just won’t be enough for you. But, a trip to Ngari is a great idea. If you’re going to explore the natural beauty of this country, Ngari is an excellent destination. It’s regarded by many as the “Roof of the World’s Roof.”

The Kailash Mountain is arguably the most stunning attraction that you will see here. It’s regarded as the center of the world by the local people, and also explore the Guge Kingdom, a lost civilization. But, before you get back, you should also travel to Lake Manasarovar, which offers a gorgeous landscape.

Guided Tours

If you are in Tibet, be prepared for a lot of hiking and traveling. Stretching your legs in the wilderness of Tibet is not only inspiring and exhilarating but also incredibly helpful in releasing stress.

For people who are going to Tibet vacation and have had a busy few months, guided tours are a great choice. There are a bunch of these available, so you might want to make a booking in advance. Ideally, it’s recommended that you check the options available to you and compare the choices accordingly.

For instance, you can opt for a hiking tour that takes you to Lhasa and Shigatse, including popular destinations like the Ganden Monastery or the Samye Monastery. You’ll be accommodated in herder’s camps, and it involves a considerable amount of trekking over four days, so be prepared to walk quite a bit. Or, if you want, you can opt for a local life experiencing tour, which lets you explore the beauty of living in Tibet in general. You will visit popular destinations, but you won’t be hiking for hours on end. Make sure you plan everything before you begin your Tibet vacation to this beautiful destination.
